Resin and UV Resistance

Resin and UV Resistance

My least favorite quality about resin is that it can yellow when exposed to UV light over time. This means that if you display a resin artwork on the wall in a space where it is exposed to direct sunlight, it will slowly yellow over time. This is mostly only problematic for artworks that have very light/white hues, or where the resin is transparent.

The first and most obvious way to prevent resin from yellowing is to keep it out of direct sunlight. It can be especially tempting to hang a resin artwork in the line of direct sunlight especially if it glows in the dark, but a much better way to make it glow bright at night is to mount a picture light above the piece or have track lighting and keep it on during the day, so the piece glows bright all night.

Another consideration for me as an artist is to choose a resin brand that is of the highest quality and contains a good amount of UV blockers such as HALS. Resin brands are definitely not created equal, and I have experimented with a wide range of reputable brands to find my favorite brand that contains all the qualities that I'm looking for, including UV resistance.

I have also purchased a bottle of HALS for my resin to have increased UV protection. Although I'm in no way affiliated with the product I'm using, I will be adding the product pictured to all my pieces because it is extremely important to me that your resin artwork always look fabulous! xo
